An integral department for every luxury hotel or resort, the spa is a sanctuary which helps guests inhabit that ‘holiday feeling’. In my (more than) 30-year career as a hotel photographer, I’ve photographed many of these tranquil spaces and selected some of my images from the archive to transport you to different spas this summer.

Whether it’s a serene respite perched atop a mountain, or a lush escape nestled within an urban jungle, these retreats epitomise the ultimate in relaxation and revitalisation. With my lens I take viewers into these spaces, highlighting both their sumptuous design and conveying the sense of peace and harmony that can be found. I invite you to delve into this visual journey and perhaps my photography can inspire your next spa getaway.

1. Eden Spa at Dusit Doha, Qatar

Stretching across the entire 29th floor in this five-star property in West Bay is the Eden Spa. From my vantage point, I wanted to capture its opulence and the vivid purple that is associated with Dusit Hotels & Resorts worldwide, reflective of their Thai traditions and upmarket hospitality.

I also expertly combined images to highlight the impressive cityscape visible through the floor-to-ceiling spa windows. The interplay of the dusk light with the spa’s interior enhances the sense of serenity and appeal for the customer.

2. Talise Spa, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai

I have been collaborating with Jumeirah on hospitality photography projects since they first invited me to capture Burj Al Arab, which prompted my move to Dubai.

The stunning outdoor spa cabanas at Talise Spa are set amid lush fronds and bathed in natural light. I’ve explained previously the allure of natural light and by using it here I can create a captivating visual narrative that showcases the blend of verdant nature and refined comfort in this secluded retreat tucked away in the highly picturesque Madinat Jumeirah.

3. The H Resort Beau Vallon Seychelles

When anyone thinks of the Seychelles, it calls to mind beach-bound days in the sunshine and pampering in elegant spaces. This spa embodies that spirit, and it was my role to transport the viewer to this environment with my camera.

This specific image emphasises the perfect symmetry of the spa’s design, creating a harmonious balance that instantly conveys a sense of calm and sophistication. The way the symmetrical lines guide the viewer’s eye through the frame enhances the overall feeling of zen and order.

It required careful placing of lights to ensure that the image was well-lit yet preserve the gentle ambiance we expect from an island spa.

4. Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas

From one Seychelles spa to another in the archipelago, Anantara Spa is a beautiful oasis that is framed by the jungle. It is truly tropical!

As an architectural photographer, it’s always a great honour to photograph the work of a famed architect, and this entire resort was designed by Bill Bensley. Sustainability is a key focus of all Bensley’s projects, and this is a wonderful example.

I used models in this image to help the viewer imagine the experience that they would enjoy at this extraordinary spa.

5. Talise Spa, Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel, Kuwait

Another stunning Talise Spa, this one located in Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel, Kuwait. The colours in this spa are striking, yet they soothe from within. The challenge in photographing spas often lies in the tiling, as it bounces the light in different directions. As you can imagine, capturing this warm amber glow wasn’t immediately feasible, but I came prepared.

The calming effect is accentuated by the subtle gradients of the amber light, and these also highlight the quality of the textures and materials used in the spa design. With careful adjustment of my lens and specialised lighting, I was able to portray the harmonious glow that transforms this space and beckons the viewer into this relaxing room.

As a Dubai-based hospitality photographer, I am available for spa photography in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, India and across the world.  Get in touch if you wish to elevate your spa or wellness brand through professional photography.
